Segundo D. António Marto esta escolha é “uma homenagem” e um “motivo de alegria e de honra” que se deve facto de Nossa Senhora de Fátima ser “um ícone representativo para todo o mundo cristão”. O prelado explica em entrevista à Agência ECCLESIA que “foi uma surpresa” o telefonema que recebeu “em meados de janeiro de 2013”, a solicitar, na altura em nome do Papa Bento XVI, que a imagem venerada na Cova da Iria fosse a Roma participar na Jornada Mariana do Ano da Fé, entre sábado e domingo. Nos mesmos dias 12 e 13 assinala-se a última peregrinação internacional do ano, no Santuário de Fátima, mas “ao Santo Padre nunca se diz que não”, revelou D. António Marto que não pode acompanhar a imagem, “num ato tão único e tão solene e significativo”. “Do ponto de vista da fé a união e a comunhão exprime-se mesmo estando aqui e a imagem lá”, acrescentou. António Marto, a devoção mariana do Papa foi revelada no início do pontificado quando “foi à Basílica de Santa Maria Maior confiar o seu ministério a Nossa Senhora” ou quando visitou o Santuário da Aparecida, em São Paulo, Brasil, e “o interessante é que o Papa Francisco também se referiu a Fátima” na primeira vez em que presidiu à recitação dominical do Angelus. Os dias 12 e 13 de outubro são “o cume da celebração do ano da fé” no Santuário de Fátima, e a presença do Secretário de Estado do Vaticano, D. Tarcisio Bertone, num dos seus últimos atos públicos, “realça esta comunhão e sintonia do Papa com o Santuário” com “maior peso, significado e maior alcance” do que se o cardeal italiano viesse na condição de “ex-secretário de Estado”. Tarcisio Bertone “foi o enviado especial” do Papa João Paulo II para dialogar com a irmã Lúcia sobre “a interpretação da terceira parte do segredo de Fátima”, por isso, “deve ser das pessoas que tem mais proximidade e conhece mais por dentro a mensagem de Fátima e todas as vicissitudes que a foram acompanhando”. Quanto a uma visita de Francisco ao Santuário de Fátima, o bispo da diocese revela que “o convite oficial” da Conferência Episcopal Portuguesa já foi enviado devido à “agenda do Papa” e explica que a resposta, “na melhor das hipóteses”, chegará um ano antes.
